You don't need to touch the LPC and quite frankly outside of law no one really knows what it is. It wasn't easy but I passed everything first time and they paid for it so never failed and got fired thankfully.Īccountancy graduate schemes want ANY degree with 2.1 (some allow 2.2). The ATT and CTA qualification they paid for but I had to study whilst I worked full time, I got days off to attend college but it required months of evenings and weekends to be able to pass the exams on top of working 50-60 hours a week. I explained in my post, i did my law degree then got onto a graduate scheme at an accountancy firm in their tax department. My job as a tax accountant has maths but it's all simple maths, the bulk of my day requires analysis, logic, report writing etc. I'll admit it's not an easy route as you have to balance full time work and full time study (with neither being acceptable to deprioritise) plus if you fail you normally get fired (some allow 1 retake but you need to pay for it, no extra study support and have to use holiday days) but they do pay for it. I did my training contract and did my ATT and CTA then went into industry and have been in-house since then. We had every Wednesday alumni visit the law school to talk through their careers - tax seemed like it used law regularly in a practical way AND the graduate schemes PAY for your qualification! I realised in 2nd year I was only applying for vacation schemes at law firms because everyone else was, I wasn't going to get a training contract and I couldn't afford to fund the LPC myself. My degree helped me massively as I deal with legislation and cases everyday in my job, I was worried my lack of maths skills would hinder me (A at GCSE but hated every second of it) but once you've learnt some Excel formulas, you're golden! I also did a tax law module in 3rd year and did my dissertation on it too. Tax Manager (chartered tax adviser) here with a law degree.
